Political and economic stress sometimes prompts even more reason to have good self defense awareness. The world is not as safe as it used to be. Although wars, conflicts and human cruelty have always been with the world since ancient times, your parents or other members of the older generation might relate the old days more being more peaceful, people being kinder, more optimistic and generous.
Is Society Getting Better Or Worse
No one can deny that there is much danger in the streets today. Stress from the extreme political upheavals and conflicts that many nations are currently experiencing coupled with the sense of uncertainty caused by the downturn of the economy and consequent lay-offs and unemployment, ultimately lead to an upsurge of crime rate. The combined effects of stress, lack of income and fear, can sometimes grip citizens into a offensive state of mind. There could be a rise of all types of street violence.
Another major point differentiating the modern world from the ancient world is that man now has the means to end all life with a single push of the button. Technological advances in warfare have culminated to the point where all human life can be snuffed out with one stroke. This breeds a deeper fear in the heart of the world’s population. This fear has resulted in other negative consequences, including the increase of crime, hate and distrust.
With the current state of worldly affairs, everyone should have self-defense awareness and at least the basic know-how of close combat techniques. There are so many types of self-defense. These types can be divided into unarmed and armed techniques.
Unarmed Self Defense
Unarmed self-defense methods are usually known as martial arts. To name just a few examples, there is classic karate, Aikido, judo and Wing Chun. Also consider Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kun Do. Everybody loves Bruce Lee.
Other forms of martial arts are Keysi, the brutal Israeli form of Krav Maga, Jiu Jitsu, the revered Chinese Liu He Ba Fa, Jet Li’s Chen style and Yang Zhen Duo style Tai Chi Chuan. All of these methods have their own merits and are effective in their own right, and mastery in any one of them can immensely improve one’s chances of surviving a fight.
I’ve taken Kung fu forms, karate and Krav Maga. So far my favorite form of fighting is Krav Maga, hands down. Self Defense Awareness is a strong point taught in when training in this form of defense. Krav Maga is the way of fighting developed in Israel, a nation of non stop conflict and fighting throughout history, now and into the future. It MUST be ruthless! Wouldn’t you say?
Keep in mind that many forces, including the U.S. Police force and the U.S. Military is now being trained in Krav Maga.
Armed Self Defense
As for armed techniques, one can easily think of the Philippine Indigenous Arnis – classified as the deadliest armed martial arts style today. Then there is Ninjutsu which combines both armed and unarmed techniques. Ninjutsu trains in stealth, information gathering, non-detection, disguise, concealment, assassination, medicine and the use of blades as well as various firearms.
Lets not forget your guns and rifles. My U.S. family, I’m only going to say this once, PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS. Don’t let them wiggle you out of your right to bear arms. As you might be able to tell, that is the next move of the Government. Expect the way of convincing us of gun control to be very slick.
Self Defense Awareness
One does not have to become a Bruce Lee, Jet Li, a ninja or a Chuck Norris to successfully employ basic self-defense awareness techniques. This article presents basic procedures by which you as an ordinary citizen can defend yourself from any attacker.
Below are the simple self-defense pointers geared toward instructing you in both mental preparation and simple practical techniques. This is essential knowledge that should be shared with your family and friends.
Create The Proper Mindset
During an attack, the ordinary individual is usually unprepared because such events are generally unexpected. You should have a mindset that anytime is a possible time for an attacker to strike. Thus, when an attacker presents himself, you can be well prepared.
An essential factor for survival is to always think that there is a possibility for death. Accepting this hard truth will help you in concentrating on the proper action in spite of the presence of great fear. Too much fear without adequate mental preparation leads to panic. Panic, more often than not, can lead to disastrous results. Thus, to place fear in the proper context is to increase your chances of surviving a deadly encounter.
The proper self defense awareness mindset will clear your mind and present options by which to succeed and survive. This leads us to the next point.
Summoning Your Courage
Retreating is only feasible when there is a good chance that the attacker won’t be able to catch up with you. An attack at close quarters eliminates this option. This is no time to run away.
In such a situation, counter the attacker with a good self-defense and counterattack. Usually, lowly predators are opportunists who expect their victims to cower with fear and give in. Advancing against an attacker usually gives the element of surprise which you can use to your great advantage.
Upon springing the surprise counterattack, make sure you take full advantage of the situation by delivering your most damaging hits.
Make Every Move Count
Do not flail your arms or legs in defensive moves that have no direction. Here, the way of the samurai and the ninja becomes appropriate. The least possible number of moves with the most damaging effect is most efficient. For example, kick only when you are sure that your kick will connect hard. Deliver A kick that will only result in ineffective damage. A miss is a crucial waste of energy and position which will leave you open for the attacker’s countermove.
Practical Body Parts To Use
Unlike Kung-fu movies, the fist is usually not the best weapon to use. The fist is composed of sensitive fingers that can inflict more damage on the puncher than the one being punched.
Instead, you can use the base of the hand near the wrist to strike, or use the lateral part of your hand like a karate chop. This can inflict more damage to the offender and less pain on you.
You can also use the hardest part of your anatomy; your skull. Giving your opponent a good head butt on the nose is a powerful way of delivering a serious blow with minimal damage to you.
Be Aware Of All The Spaces Available To You
Fighting does not mean you have to get hurt. It does mean using all your resources, such as the spaces available to you.
A fight doesn’t have to be met head-on and forward. Going from side to side while you block or avoid your enemy gives you better leverage and control of the situation.
Use lateral movements to avoid strikes and deliver one of your own in return.
Use All Your Resources
Everything and anything can be utilized as a weapon. Guns and knives are usually not available to you in such situations. They are normally illegal to carry (unless you are in a post-apocalyptic world, of course). Furthermore, most people do not have firearms training or the time and interest to engage in it.
In a real-world scenario, even a pen or an umbrella can be turned into an effective weapon. Use the pen you are carrying to stab the groin and other soft body parts, such as the eyes or the abdominal organs. Rocks lying around the area can also be used. They are most useful in damaging hard body parts such as the skull, knees and other bony parts.
Aim For The Weak Areas
Weak spots can render even the most hardened fighter into a weakling. For men, the testicles are an obvious spot. Your attacker will not be able to touch you once you have delivered a smashing blow to his groins.
Eyes, nose, ears, knees, and the throat are other desirable weak points to target. Take FULL advantage of them.
The Man Of Peace
Nobody has to be a victim even in a dangerous world. Learning simple techniques is essential for you to be able to defend yourself and deliver blows which may be crippling or lethal for your attacker and conducive to your own well-being.
As a final word, the best method of self-defense is to cultivate the consciousness of peace. This is the Law of Attraction at work. Be peaceful at heart.
A peace-consciousness that reaches deeper than the bone and into one’s very subconscious, is to deflect conflict even before it has occurred. Such consciousness will lead you into peaceful valleys and let you avoid violence wherever you may turn. You will leave an area just before violence erupts there; violence will end even before you arrive at a scene.
This peace-consciousness is achieved by cultivating feelings of joy, peace and harmony every single day, even for just a few minutes. It will ultimately lead to the flowering of a peaceful mind and a harmonious life. This is the truest self-defense you can ever employ.
